Disclaimer

This guide can be used with the free version of ChatGPT as well as the paid versions.
To get the most out of your time using ChatGPT as a Spanish Sidekick, I highly recommend paying roughly $20/month for the paid plan.
Why? It has:
Built in memory
Use of "projects"
The ability to create your own custom GPT
These are powerful tools that will be mentioned in this guide. That being said, the guide is written to be used with any version — including the free one.
Step 1: Learn How to Work With ChatGPT
Core Philosophy: You Don't Just Use ChatGPT — You Collaborate With It
(AKA: ChatGPT as Your Spanish Sidekick)
Most people approach ChatGPT like a search engine or homework helper. They ask a question, see what it says, and move on. But when it comes to language learning, that mindset won't get you far.

Here's the key shift:
  • You don't use ChatGPT.
  • You collaborate with it.
You're the leader. You set the tone. You create the plan. ChatGPT is your assistant — your Spanish Sidekick — here to help you practice, reflect, and grow.
What ChatGPT Can Become For You
Conversation partner
Gentle or assertive grammar checker
Creative writing buddy
Travel rehearsal guide
Accountability coach
Quizmaster, storyteller, even therapist (in Spanish)
…but only if you tell it how to show up.
Core Concept: Prompts
To get high-quality, personalized practice, you need to give ChatGPT a few things. Collectively, these things will be the core of your prompt. I will walk you through exactly how to create the best possible prompt that is highly personalized to you. For example, these are the things that will make up your prompt:
1
Give ChatGPT a Role
  • "You are my Spanish tutor."
  • "You are a native Spanish speaker from Colombia helping me learn."
  • "You are my conversation coach. Treat this like a friendly, informal chat."
2
Set Boundaries & Instructions
  • "Please speak only in Spanish unless I ask otherwise."
  • "Correct my mistakes after I finish speaking."
  • "Use Latin American Spanish and simple sentences."
3
Provide Context About You
  • "I'm a B1-level learner. I want to improve my confidence and fluency."
  • "I'm learning Spanish for an upcoming trip."
  • "I struggle with verb tenses and like to learn through storytelling."
Understanding Default vs Collaborative Prompts

Default Prompt:
"How do I use the past tense in Spanish?" → you'll get a generic explanation, maybe a list of verbs.

Collaborative Prompt:
"You are my Spanish tutor. I'm a visual learner at an A2 level. Teach me the past tense by making up a simple story that uses it a lot. Ask me questions about the story as we go."
→ Now you're practicing, not just reading.
Practice = Power
Effective language learning doesn't happen when you read about Spanish. It happens when you use it — messily, playfully, repeatedly.
Now that you are familiar with how to interact with ChatGPT effectively...
Let's create a one-time Discovery Session that sets you up for personalized practice going forward.
Step 2: Discovery Session — You as a Learner
A one-time conversation to assess your level and personalize your Spanish Sidekick.
This section helps ChatGPT:
Estimate your CEFR level (A1–C2)
Understand your motivations and goals
Learn how you like to practice
Discover what kind of feedback and support works best for you

At the end, ChatGPT will write a short summary that you can copy and paste into future chats — or save as a pinned note in your study routine.
Why This Matters
Think of this like setting up your AI assistant for long-term success.
If you're a free user:
this summary becomes your portable memory. You'll paste it at the beginning of each new session to remind ChatGPT who you are.
If you're a Plus or Pro user with built in memory:
this gives ChatGPT the right foundation to remember you correctly — from the start. It will also be used to create a Project or Custom GPT (the ultimate use of ChatGPT), which I will walk you through later.
Set Up a ChatGPT Account

Before you start, make sure you have set up an account with ChatGPT. Your chats won't be saved if you do not.
If for whatever reason you do not want to set up an account, you can still copy and paste your Discovery Session Prompt into a fresh chat. It will work either way.
The Discovery Session Prompt

You will need to set aside 15–20 minutes or so to complete this assessment.
Copy and paste the full text below into ChatGPT to begin your session:
You are my Spanish tutor and language coach. I want to begin our relationship with a Discovery Session. Please run this session in two parts:
🔹 PART ONE: CEFR Level Assessment
Ask me 5–7 questions in Spanish designed to help you estimate my CEFR level (A1–C2). Give the initial instructions in English to ensure we get started correctly. Start with basic personal and daily-life questions, then gradually introduce more complex topics like past events, future goals, opinions, and conditional/hypothetical scenarios. Feel free to ask me to describe things, tell a story, or transform a sentence. Do not count omitting accents and other Spanish keyboard characters against me. If I don't understand something, briefly explain it in English or rephrase it.
🔹 PART TWO: Personal Learning Profile
Switch into a friendly interview mode and ask me 5–7 open-ended questions (in Spanish or English — I'll let you know what's easier). Try to get to know me as a learner. Ask about:
- My past experiences with Spanish or other languages
- Why I want to learn Spanish
- My travel background or goals
- My learning style or preferences
- How I learn best / what I struggle with
- How much time I realistically have to study
- My personality, motivation, and sense of humor Ask follow-ups if my answers are vague.
Make it a conversation!
🔹 FINAL STEP Once you have gathered the above information, summarize everything you've learned about me in 1–2 short paragraphs in English. Make sure you write the summary in first person from my perspective. Ask me if I'm ready for you to create the summary when you believe you have enough information. This summary should include:
1. My estimated CEFR level and why you chose it
2. My language goals and motivations
3. My learning style, time availability, and what works best for me
4. Anything unique or fun about my personality that might help in future lessons
Let's begin!
What to Do With the Summary
Once ChatGPT finishes the summary, copy and save it somewhere you can reuse it often — like a notes app, Google Doc, or your first pinned chat.

Here's a sample summary ChatGPT might give you:
"You are an intermediate Spanish learner (B1 level) motivated by travel and cultural connection. You prefer conversational, real-life practice over grammar drills. You're available to study 3 times a week and enjoy storytelling, light humor, and feedback after you finish speaking. You sometimes struggle with verb tenses and want more confidence in live conversations."
Use This in Future Chats:
Paste your summary into any new session like this:
You are my Spanish tutor. Here's a quick summary of who I am as a learner:
[PASTE SUMMARY HERE]
Please keep this in mind during today's conversation and help guide our practice based on my goals and preferences.
👉 Next, let's unlock the Prompt Vault
This section is your practice playground — but structured.
Step 3: The Prompt Vault
Powerful, flexible prompts for practicing Spanish — organized by purpose, not topic.
After you copy and paste your Discovery Session summary, browse this library of prompts and simply copy and paste one that piques your interest! Play with it for as long as you want and then do another.

If you want a cleaner version to use for copy and pasting, we have included a Word document in the download folder.

Paraphrase Practice
Say a sentence in Spanish. Then ask me to restate it using different words or a different structure. Give me feedback after each one.

Two-Tone Challenge
Ask me to describe a situation in two different tones: formal and informal. Help me adjust my vocabulary and phrasing to match each one.
Make It More Natural
Let me speak freely in Spanish for a few sentences. Then rephrase what I said using more natural, native-sounding Spanish. Show me how it could sound better.
Culture & Expressions

Teach me five common Spanish idioms that native speakers use in everyday conversation. Explain what they mean and give me a fun example for each one in context.

Pick a Spanish-speaking country and teach me a phrase or expression that's unique to that region. Then give me a short dialogue using it in a natural setting.
Cultural Insight Challenge

Reflect & Recap Prompts
End sessions with useful reflection and reinforcement.
What Did I Learn?
At the end of our conversation, summarize 3 things I did well and 2 things I could improve. Give me one phrase or grammar point to practice next time.
Language Journal Helper
Based on what we talked about today, help me write a 3–4 sentence journal entry in Spanish. Fix my mistakes and suggest new vocabulary to make it stronger.
If You Get Stuck…
Prompts, resets, and reminders for when motivation dips or ChatGPT gets weird.
Feeling Tired or Unmotivated?
  • Low-Energy Prompt: I'm tired today but still want to practice Spanish. Can we keep it super simple and low-pressure? Ask me friendly questions in Spanish and don't correct me unless it's a big mistake.
  • Or: I don't want to think too hard. Surprise me with something fun or easy in Spanish — a mini game, silly story, or random fact.
Getting Bored or Stuck in a Rut?
  • Prompt to Break the Routine: We've been doing a lot of the same kinds of practice. Can you suggest something new or different that still helps me improve my Spanish?
  • Randomizer Prompt: Give me 3 fun Spanish practice ideas right now — one for speaking, one for writing, and one just for fun.
ChatGPT is Repeating Itself or Not Being Helpful?
  • Prompt Reset: Hey — I think we've gotten a little off track. Can we reset? You're my Spanish tutor, and I want to focus on [goal or grammar topic]. Start fresh with one question in Spanish.
  • Refocus Prompt: Let's get back to real practice. Ask me a question that makes me use [past tense / subjunctive / conversation phrases] and give me feedback after.
You Just Need a Little Encouragement?
  • Gentle Support Prompt: I'm feeling a little discouraged. Can you remind me of a few things I've been doing well in Spanish and why it's normal to feel stuck sometimes?
Bottom Line
1
Some practice is better than no practice.
2
Even a 5-minute chat can keep the gears turning.
3
You're building a relationship with the language — one day at a time.
4
Take breaks. Be kind to yourself. And come back when you're ready.
Step 4: The Ultimate Use of ChatGPT
(Paid versions only)
Two Options:
  • Set up your Spanish Sidekick in PROJECTS
  • Build a Custom GPT Spanish Sidekick
1. Set up your Spanish Sidekick in PROJECTS
This is by far the most powerful use of a ChatGPT Spanish Sidekick.
Using a Project in ChatGPT with your Spanish Sidekick instructions gives you the best of both worlds:
Memory-like behavior: Your learner profile and preferences live in the Project, so you don't have to repeat yourself
Consistency across chats: You can have separate chats for grammar, fun, conversation, etc. — and they all remember your goals
Organization: you can organize by topic, skill, or any other way you see fit.
It's like building your own private classroom — one where your Spanish tutor remembers your style, follows your lead, and grows with you. This is by far best for long term growth and building a relationship with your Spanish Sidekick. Think of it as a folder system where each folder (Project) has it's own memory and set of instructions. It helps you keep everything organized!

How to Make It (Step-by-Step):
  1. On the left sidebar, click the New Projects icon
  1. Click Instructions
  1. In the "Instructions" tab, paste these instructions and make sure to include your Discovery Session summary where indicated and any other default info you want ChatGPT to remember inside this Project
This acts like persistent memory for all chats within the project.
Now you're set!
Every time you launch a new chat in this project it will follow the Project instructions and remember previous conversations within that project only
2. Building a Custom GPT as your Spanish Sidekick
Create your own personalized Spanish tutor inside ChatGPT — no coding required.
If you're using ChatGPT Plus or Pro, you have access to Custom GPTs — personalized AI assistants you can build in minutes.
This section walks you through creating your very own Spanish Sidekick — a GPT that remembers your goals, adapts to your style, and responds just the way you want it to.

What's a Custom GPT?
A Custom GPT is your own personal version of ChatGPT. You can:
  • Give it a name, tone, and personality
  • Set instructions for how it should teach you
  • Upload reference materials (like vocab lists or grammar cheat sheets)
  • Save your learner profile permanently (no need to repeat it every time)
What Makes a Custom GPT Great?
  • You don't need to paste in your learner profile every time
  • You can build multiple GPTs for different purposes (e.g., one for grammar, one for fun conversation)

Are there any drawbacks?
Yes. It's main drawback is that it doesn't have any memory, so each chat is a standalone chat with no memory of previous chats - that's where Projects shine.
That being said, it does have some unique benefits:
For experimentation:
  • You can clone different learning personalities ("chill tutor," "test proctor," "immersion-only coach") and switch between them.
  • AKA make as many Sidekicks as you want with different styles or personalities.
  • Have you had a rough day? Choose Emilia, the calm, warm, encouraging Spanish Sidekick.
  • Feel motivated to work hard? Choose Sergio, the firm, no nonsense, drill sergeant Spanish Sidekick to work with.
It's like having a fleet of teaching bots customized to your learning zones
For "always-on" tone:
  • Unlike default GPTs that can drift in tone, Custom GPTs never forget how they're supposed to behave during the session

STEP 5: Practice Out Loud with ChatGPT Voice
Speak Spanish out loud — with your AI Sidekick as a conversation partner.
One of the most powerful (and fun) ways to grow your fluency is by talking out loud. With ChatGPT Voice, you can have real-time conversations — no typing, no partner, just natural back-and-forth practice.
You'll improve your pronunciation, listening, thinking speed, and confidence — all from your phone or computer.
Advanced Voice Mode
For the best experience, use advanced voice mode (indicated by a blue/white circle). The system may switch to standard mode (a black circle) if you run out of allowed time or are in a poor service area.
Daily Voice Limits
ChatGPT occasionally adjusts its daily voice limits. Currently, there's a generous, though unspecified, limit for advanced voice mode. Paid plans get more time allowance.
Personalize Your Voice
You can choose from a variety of voices. In the near future, even greater personalization options, such as controlling mood, attitude, and accent, are expected to be rolled out.
Start by Setting the Scene
For best results, begin the conversation by pasting your Discovery Session Summary (your learner profile) into the chat — just like you would in a text-based session.
Once that's in place, hit the 🎧 Voice icon to shift into spoken Spanish mode. Your Sidekick will take it from there.

Tip:
You can also ask for a Discovery Session out loud:
"Quiero hacer una evaluación de mi nivel de español."
How to Launch Voice Mode
On Mobile (iOS / Android):
  • Open the ChatGPT app
  • Tap the voice icon (bottom-right)
  • Choose your voice
  • Start talking!
On Web (chat.openai.com):
  • Click the Voice icon on the right side of the prompt bar
  • Grant mic access if needed
  • Start chatting!

Voice mode works for all logged-in users.
  • Free users get GPT-4o mini with limits. Although, this is being expanded.
  • Plus/Pro users get full GPT-4o voice — faster, smarter, more expressive.
Why Voice Mode Is Marvelous
Practice real, natural Spanish conversation
Think faster and respond in the moment
Build muscle memory for pronunciation and phrasing
Real time mistake correction if prompted to do so
Review full transcripts of every conversation
Use it on the go — walking, cooking, commuting
Voice Options (Choose Your Conversation Vibe)
Ember
Confident and optimistic
Cove
Calm and direct
Breeze
Animated and earnest
Juniper
Open and upbeat
Vale
Bright and curious
Spruce
Calm and affirming
Sol
Savvy and relaxed
Maple

You can change voices in Settings or during voice mode (⋯ menu). Changes may require starting a new chat.
Voice Mode Prompts
Use these to get started, keep the conversation flowing, or ask for help in real time.
The best way to use voice is to simply treat it like a friend. Just start talking and keep it natural.
Did something happen at work today? Try explaining it in Spanish. See how long you can keep the conversation going — even if it's messy. You decide if you want to switch back and forth between English and Spanish or speak exclusively in Spanish and you can direct your Spanish Sidekick to match your needs and preferences. Practice and play.
If you'd prefer some structure, try one of the prompts below:
"Hola. Quiero practicar español contigo en voz alta. ¿Listo?" Start the session and set the tone.
"Corrígeme si cometo errores, pero háblame solo en español." Ask for full immersion with gentle corrections.
"Hazme preguntas simples como si fuera principiante." Great for beginners or low-energy days.
"No entendí. ¿Puedes repetirlo más despacio o explicarlo con un ejemplo?" Use this anytime you're stuck.
"Enséñame una frase útil que usaría en un restaurante." Ask for real-life language, one moment at a time.
"Actúa como un mesero. Yo seré el cliente." Role-play to practice common scenarios.
"¿Qué errores cometí durante esta conversación?" Ask for reflection and feedback at the end.
